This week on TechHive: Free streaming apps (and why you’re probably not using them)
The world of streaming video is a lot bigger than Netflix and Amazon Prime–if you know where to look. The problem is that devices like Roku and Fire TV don’t make it easy to discover the hidden gems. Read more on TechHive.
Weekly Rewind
Plex escapes the PC: A long-time favorite tool for people with massive collections of downloaded movies and ripped DVDs, Plex streams video from a “server” PC or NAS box to a “client” device, such as your phone, tablet, or TV.
But who keeps a desktop PC running around the clock anymore? Later this month, Plex will bring its server software to the Nvidia Shield Android TV, a $200-and-up streaming TV box and game console. Load up the Shield’s hard drive (or an external drive) with all your videos, music, and photos, and you can beam them to any other device around the house. A powerful living room box like the Shield is a natural place for Plex to go as PC usage wanes. Read more on the Plex blog.
Xbox One DVR no more: Late year, Microsoft seemed to embrace cord cutting on the Xbox One with plans to support DVR for free over-the-air broadcasts. Users would be able to record shows from the major networks (ABC, CBS, and so on) directly to the Xbox’s hard drive for later viewing, and also stream those recordings to other devices around the house. Windows 10 users would even be able to download recordings to their PCs for offline viewing.
Nothing quite like that exists on the market today, and now it seems nothing will. Microsoft says it’s putting those DVR plans on hold to focus more on gaming features. The announcement is a blow to cord cutters–especially those who invested in an Xbox One and accompanying TV tuner on Microsoft’s word. I’ll have more thoughts on this in next week’s column. Read more on The Verge.
This week’s top deal is the new Roku Streaming Stick for just $38 on Amazon, a $12 discount off the regular price. It doesn’t have a voice remote like the $100 Roku 3 or $140 Roku 4, but is much faster than previous versions, making it a great fit for your second or third television.
